Lucy in a Sand Hole by Heiki Vilep is a collection of three delightful short stories revolving around Lucy and her adventures. The stories are enchanting and they all have beautiful concepts for young readers. In “An especially special pancake,” Lucy, Andy and Madeline decide to make pancakes as there is no one in the house. “How Lucy became a war nurse” describes how Lucy and her friends play a war game and Lucy takes care of the wounded with gauze bandages, medicines and vitamins. The last short story, “Lucy in a sand hole,” is a fun tale where Lucy entertains readers by making sand cakes to sell to pay for her new bike she is planning to buy. All the stories have different themes, which make the book an entertaining read.
The author’s voice is very nice and engaging. The stories are detailed and descriptive with colorful illustrations that help readers connect and identify well with the characters and scenes. The stories have their own magic and whimsy which will keep children engrossed till the very end. Lucy is adorable and so are the rest of the characters. What makes the book relatable is the fact that kids can do everything that Lucy and her friends do in the stories. Whether it is Lucy making sand cakes, her meeting the alien, making pancakes and messing up the kitchen, or reconquering the hill, all the stories are fast paced and charming.
